Other is defined as "as well as the thing or person already mentioned". For example, "The other day ...." means a day different to the current one, and in this context it commonly refers to a day in the past.

Another is defined as "one more person or thing or an extra amount". For example, "I'm on holiday another day" means that I've been on holiday for at least one day already, and I have at least one more day still being on holiday.
